HELLLOOO!!! I’m so excited to finally be blogging from my own domain, as you may have noticed. “By the Sparkling Sea” has now been renamed to “Joleen Cuisine”, and I just thought that I would focus this blog more on my love for food (and travel). But mainly food, because I’ve found that a good portion of my time, thoughts and picture revolve around my next meal, new kitchen gadgets that get me excited (uhm, anyone go crazy over the spiralizer?!), healthy recipes, and of course, the
occasional decadent, indulgent dessert that my sweet tooth just can’t wait to get a hold of.
I still have quite a lot of updating and refurnishing to do with this blog in terms of layout and posts, but one of the main reasons I decided to finally splurge on my own self-hosted blog and a new theme was because I was getting sick of the “you are out of space” message that would constantly pop up on my old blog and there are just too many pictures I want to share with the world. Always running out of space and limiting myself to only a couple of pictures per post was just really frustrating and annoying. I treat all my pictures and anything I make in the kitchen as a precious work of art, and it’s like my own little baby that I invest my time (that should probably be spent studying) and love into creating them. And these babies just need to be shared, loved and appreciated. As crazy and chaotic as the Internet can be sometimes, I just love that it can also be a creative space for home chefs, bloggers, regular old college students, moms, philosophers, teachers, dancers, photographers, and really, just ANYONE to share their work and art. I’m just really happy to be sharing these pictures and posts with you, and I hope to learn, grow, and get inspired from you too.
So, shall we celebrate with some cupcakes?!
These cupcakes are from Sugar and Scribe Bakery located in La Jolla, California. And you know what’s really sweet? Cupcakes, yes, but the fact that my roommate’s best friend from high school (who’s studying abroad in Europe right now) decided to make a call way over here to America, find a local bakery, and order cupcakes for her (and us-her apartmentmates!) and surprise her for her birthday. Such a thoughtful and kind human being.
We got an arrangement of beautiful cupcakes and let me just say that these might be my new favorite cupcake. I personally am a lot more picky with cupcakes, just because there’s so much variation that can go into getting ones with the right type of frosting, ones that don’t taste too artificial, cakes that are too moist or too dry…but these cupcakes from Sugar and Scribe hit the spot, for sure.
So, I practically sacrificed a week’s worth of calories taste testing a little chunk of each cupcake flavor so I could decipher which one was which, since we didn’t put in the order and have no idea what the flavors are, but this cupcake right here is a chocolate-y chocolate chip cake with some vanilla buttercream frosting, complete with sprinkles and a fudge drizzle!
The thing that makes these cupcakes so delicious is how moist the cupcakes are. They’re just right, not too sweet, and just smell so amazing. The soft buttercream frosting on top of the cupcakes are smooth, sweet and come with texture to complement the cupcake perfectly. This is coconut vanilla and bourbon cake, complete with shredded coconut.
When cupcakes are almost glittery…this right here is a chocolate cupcake with a salted caramel on top! We picked this one just for the birthday girl!
What better way to enjoy cupcakes than to slice them into fourths (and eighths), leave them on the dining table for all to share, and just wait slowly as they disappear?
Thank you to Allison for delivering these cupcakes and a very happy birthday to my dear roommate Mai!
