If you are ever in need of some good, authentic tacos–just make a trip to San Diego and leave it to the numerous Mexican restaurants to satisfy your cravings. With all the help I get from Yelp, I’ve managed to never come across a bad taco place and Don Carlos Taco Shop is another taco place I have to add to one of the good Mexican eateries in San Diego to get your tacos and burritos.
Don Carlos Taco Shop is located in downtown La Jolla and serves as the perfect pit stop after a long, relaxing day at the beach. You will have to look for street parking, but there are usually several available if you don’t mind some extra walking. It’s a small restaurant, but there is outdoor seating available.
A couple of benches are also available inside for indoor seating.
This place seems to be quite popular, with their California burrito as one of the top choices. They’re apparently voted “Best Burrito” in San Diego (proof on the wall).
My friend and I both decided to get the carne asada tacos, since their pollo asada tacos were all out when we went. Tacos are a bit pricier than average, but you should expect to pay around $3 or $4 for a taco in many of the places in La Jolla. However, the portions are actually pretty large so you pay to get a good amount of filling inside these tacos. Combo options are available that come with a side of rice and beans, which is a good option if you’re looking to add some sides to your tacos.
The meat for the carne asada was juicy and marinated well, and it was topped with a fresh side of guacamole and salsa, all laid out on some warm corn tortillas. And of course, no tacos are complete with a squeeze of lime and some more green and red salsa for that extra punch and kick! These tacos are very filling and I was quite content with my order. A bit disappointed that they ran out of chicken, but I’ll definitely make a trip back here to explore other parts of their menu!
