I always imagined paradise to be something along the lines of swinging in a hammock, surrounded by coconut trees, the rush of the ocean breeze in my hair with a view of the beautiful blue ocean before me. That, my friends, is my experience of Fiji in a nutshell. I never actually thought I would have been able to have this special time to myself in Fiji since I’m only in Fiji on transit to board the USNS Mercy, but I feel so blessed to have had this little piece of paradise.
There were a lot of changes in flights and travel accommodations that could have led to a complete travel disaster (which I was partially expecting throughout all of the carryovers), but I’ve made it to Fiji and at least I’ve gotten this far, right? Now just keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll make it onto the ship (and I’ll make it through the trip, hahah).
So amidst all the chaos that has been going on for the past couple of weeks, I can’t describe how good it feels to finally just sit down and have some time to myself and not get so caught up/be distracted with everything that has been going on around me. For a while, there was just so much that kept piling up, with all the tests I had to take, duties to take care of, appointments to make, bills to keep track of, things to move, bags to pack, and yeah—the list goes on. But even with all these things to do, I kind of just had to keep remind myself to keep going on. There will always be things to do so it’s just a matter of how we choose to go about it, you know?
Okay I’ll stop boring you with all this blabbering…I tend to get a little carried away sometimes. Anyways, about Fiji. My uncle helped book a hostel for me while we were making flight changes and the hostel he found was only $20 FJD per night. And I have to say, I was NOT disappointed. The hostel I stayed at was a beachfront resort, and I think the moment I saw the front of the hostel leading out to the beach, my jaw dropped. Here, I’ll show you some pictures so you get a feel for this breathtaking view.
These views literally meet every idea I had of parardise-lying down on a hammock hanging between two coconut trees, basking in the Fijian sun on Wailoaloa Beach, contemplating life and just relaxing.
Decided to walk along the beach, which took me to a view of a farther side of the island. How peaceful it is to just walk with your toes in the cool and clear water with views of the beautiful island in sight.
After walking to the edge of the beach, I came across this cute little Asian lady taking selfies on her iPad with the sunset in the background. I started taking pictures of the ocean too and it turned into an impromptu photoshoot between me and her where I took pictures of her and she kept telling me to strike poses in Chinese.
For dinner, there was a little outdoor patio on one of the resorts along the beach. I sat down for a little dinner right outside with the gorgeous view of this sunset—Rou Rou soup (a “local Fijian favorite” with taro and coconut) and some garlic prawn.
This comes pretty close to the sunset from Costa Rica. Stunning.
I decided to wake up early to catch the sunrise, and saw the sky painted a beautiful pink-orange. Feels so nice to just wake up, walk right outside and have the beach right there in front of you.
Breakfast with this view.
Because I’m happiest by the sparkling sea.
Goodbye, my little beautiful slice of Fiji! Off to my next stop and more adventures to come. I’m so happy to have had this little paradise and it feels so nice to just be so relaxed and have some peace. What a short, but very sweet escape—hope to be back soon!
