Acai bowls have been quite the craze for some time now, and for me, it’s a staple after a trip to the beach. Usually after a swim in the ocean, all I can think of is having something cold and sweet to cool down and de-salt all the seawater in my mouth. After a refreshing early morning swim this week from La Jolla Shores to La Jolla Cove, I knew exactly what I wanted for breakfast and had my friend drive a little farther down to Pacific Beach so I could get my acai bowl fix.
I rely on Yelp heavily for all of my restaurant and food choices, so coming here seemed obvious considering they had a 5 star rating. It’s a small cafe that sells everything from acai bowls to smoothies, coffees and Brazilian pastries.
It’s not too big on the inside and there were only 2 people working, but surprisingly enough, getting our food didn’t take too long. Also, the owner is super friendly and hospitable. He made sure to ask us how our acai bowls were and he even introduced himself. 5 stars for customer service for sure (and I think most people agree with me on this one according to Yelp).
This is the Urbano acai bowl, which is your traditional acai bowl topped with strawberries, bananas, blueberries, granola and a drizzle of honey. Portions were good, the fruit was very fresh and it’s pretty filling for a medium bowl.
My friend decided to try the other acai bowl, which is the Tribal acai bowl.
The Tribal acai bowl is for acai lovers since it sticks more to the acai instead of all the toppings. It’s topped with granola and honey, but you can get more of the acai taste with this bowl and I’ve heard it’s just as popular among customers as the Urbano. The granola and honey is crunchy and sweet, and pairs very well with the acai.
There’s not that big of a selection on their menu as I would have expected for the acai bowls in comparison to some other places that have their entire range of acai bowls to dragonfruit bowls, but there’s also coffee and chai lattes if you’re not feeling the acai. Good prices for the portion you get, fresh and delicious acai bowls, and excellent customer service and a friendly owner-there’s a whole lot to love.
